The publication “Okinawa Paradox” is the result of Joan Tomás’ artistic residency in Okinawa, an island full of paradoxes: a contemporary society rooted in its traditions, with deep ancestral beliefs and a spirituality present everywhere that coexists with the scars of the American bases installed on the island, as well as a lush tropical nature that shares space with contemporary infrastructures, and all this marked by the tragic events of the Battle of Okinawa at the end of the Second World War, where a third of the civilian population died.

“Okinawa Paradox” aims to reflect all these paradoxes, not everything is explained, but everything is hinted at between the lines, with a poetic language where the images dialogue with each other and with the texts. A publication that can be dismantled and that offers a second reading or, if you want, a continuation.

The texts are by European writers Lidija Djkosvka, Adam Foulds, Jasmin Frelih, and Walid Nabhan, who completed an artist residency in Okinawa in 2018

The project is commissioned by CRICAO in Toulouse, the European Union Prize for Literature and the Garaman Hall cultural centre in Ginoza, Okinawa.
